Optimal learning for African American students and other students of color in classrooms consider and reflect their culture. Teachers’ belief systems and how they influence their capacity to provide equitable instructional opportunities matters. Teachers who possess culturally proficient qualities engage in effective equitable strategies and seek coaching support. Teachers who complete training and learn about culturally relevant pedagogy and the cultural proficiency framework possess an awareness to be asset-minded about the “why” and “how”.
